The Second XV v Newark 3rd XV match report

Gainsborough seconds keep battling against Newark

Gainsborough's 2nd XV put in a committed performance against Newark 3rd XV at Roses on Saturday, 31 October, but finished on the wrong side of a 43–17 scoreline.

It was a demanding afternoon for the home side, who had just one substitute available against a Newark squad with considerably more players to call on. That made the task tougher as the game wore on, but Gainsborough stuck at it and continued to compete.

Ricky Smart, Shaun Dove and Jonathan Brewster each crossed for a try, giving the home side three scores to show for their efforts. Those contributions were a welcome reward for a team that kept working despite the challenge posed by the visitors. Dove also kicked one conversion.

Although the result was disappointing, there was plenty to appreciate in Gainsborough's attitude and commitment. With limited options on the bench, the lads gave a strong account of themselves and played their part in a great game of rugby.

Newark took the win, but Gainsborough could take pride in the effort they put into a tough afternoon. The final result was a shame, yet it did not take away from a performance in which the side stuck together and kept going.

James Dawson was named Man of the Match for Gainsborough, earning recognition for his contribution in a demanding contest.
